Jacks score, but high-powered Coyotes net four goals for win

Colette Behen
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Colette Behen ended the Humboldt State women's soccer drought in the 63rd minute but the high-powered CSU San Bernardino netted four scoring for the win.

After having the lone first half goal, the formerly-ranked Coyotes added three more scores in the first 14 minutes of the second half on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Lumberjacks.

"We are always learning and growing, we can learn a great deal from today.  We had moments that were very positive, especially in the counter attack but you can't gift teams goals like we did today and still be successful," said Jacks head coach Paul Karver.

For the first time in over 546 minutes, Behen's corner kick into the goal put a tally on the HSU (3-7-3/1-7-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association North) scoreboard.

Behen took three of the seven HSU shots on the Friday afternoon, but CSU San Bernardino (9-3-2/7-2-2 CCAA South) registered 15 shots as a team.

"Colette's goal today was special as we need more of that and we need it from more players.  It felt good to get back on the scoreboard," noted the HSU coach.

Coming into the game in relief, Jacks' goalie Kelly Lukas saved three Coyotes shots in the final 31:03 of the match after Amber Woolcock had one save in the first 58:57.

CSU San Bernardino's Kiana Quarles connected on the home team's third shot of the game on a wide boot around Woolcock at 5:01 into the match.

Woolcock saved another home attempt three minutes later, before the Jacks' Maddi Null had her shot saved at 20:28.

The Coyotes stormed out of the half as Makayla Varner put a rebound into the net in the first 2:53 for a 2-0 score.

The Jacks' Savannah Havranek tried to cut into the difference less than a minute later at 48:42 only to have her shot saved.

Two of Varner's teammates were able to add a goal apiece at 52:06 and 58:57 for a comfortable 4-0 margin.

"Showing up physically is not good enough to win against the teams in our conference, you have to show up mentally and we are still learning how to do that with consistency," concluded Karver.

Behen put HSU on the board on her corner kick strike with 63:23 elapsed in the affair for what would be the 4-1 final tally.

HSU will continue its weekend on the road with a 2 p.m. match at Chico State on Sunday.
