Box Score CARSON – It has been seven years, but the Humboldt State volleyball program reached double digits with its season sweep victory of Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night.
The Lumberjacks earned their 10
th victory to even the squad's season mark to 10-10. The victory puts HSU into double figures for wins for the first time since finishing 10-16 in the fall of 2007.
HSU accomplished the rebuilding milestone by going out to a two-set lead and taking away a 3-1 victory over host CSU Dominguez Hills.
"Tonight, we really needed to have a strong night after our poor performance versus Cal Poly Pomona," explained Jacks head coach
Kelly Wood. "We served really well and put them out of their system regularly, which helped our defense set up and make plays. I was proud of the overall effort of the team tonight."
Kaitlyn Dunaway pounded 14 kills with a .306 hitting percentage and a team-high 20 digs along with a pair of assists and a block to highlight the HSU (5-8 California Collegiate Athletic Association) triumph.
Ashley Owen kept her double figure kill production going with 12, while having three block assists and a dig.
Alex Hasenstab had her best night over the past few weeks with nine kills, .304 attack percentage and three blocks assists.
Symone Hayden narrowly missed her own double-double with 12 digs and nine kills with a two solo blocks.
Courtney Debrunner may not have had many kills with two, but she posted a season-best six block assists.
Sam Siebert recorded 37 set assists with five digs, three blocks assists and a kill.
Kelci Renshaw added 10 digs, two assists and an ace.
Erin Mitchell had a deuces wild night with two each of assists, digs and aces, while
Colleen Noonan dug six attacks.
HSU, which has not been posting a high block total of late, posted 10 total team blocks.
After being down by four points twice, the Jacks regrouped to rattle off five consecutive points to take it from a 20-19 deficit to a 25-19 first set win.
The Toros (8-12/1-11 CCAA) led 6-0 early on in the second game, before the Jacks would tie at 14. The home team would lead 20-17, before HSU went on an 8-2 ending for the 25-22 win to go up by two sets.
HSU led 22-20 on an Owen kill in the third set, but were unable to finish out the match. CSU Dominguez Hills put the next four points on the board and five of the last six for a 25-23 set win.
The Jacks, though, were able to close out the match in the fourth set. Tied at 23, HSU claimed the victory off a service error and an attack error by the home club for a 25-23 win.
HSU will complete its three-match Los Angeles area road trip by facing Cal State Los Angeles Saturday night starting at 7 p.m.
