Pioneers pair of first half goals enough to take Jacks

Box Score HAYWARD – A slow first half and two opposing goals within a five-minute first half span spelled trouble for Humboldt State women's soccer Sunday afternoon.

Cal State East Bay completed its second win of the fall over HSU.  The Pioneers held the Lumberjacks without a first half shot and scored goals at 33:00 and 37:57 for the 2-0 victory.

"These are the games that we have to win, if we want to be competitive in this conference," said HSU head coach Paul Karver.  "We had a number of very good moments in the game, but they didn't come close enough together and frequently enough to earn to he result."

After not attempting a shot in the first 45 minutes, the Jacks (3-10-3/1-10-3 California College Athletic Association North) put six on the board and two of them on goal in the second half.

"Our attacking play was creating opportunities but none of that matters when it comes at the expense of our ability to defend properly," added Karver.

Maddi Payne tried to pull the Jacks within a goal in the first 15 minutes of the latter half but the Pioneers' goalie Donna Williams turned away the boot.

Samantha Morris had the other kick on goal with 11 seconds left in the match.

Goalie Kelly Lukas saved five Cal State East Bay (4-10-2/4-8-2 CCAA North) shots.

The Pioneers' Kelley Brown put the first goal on the board at 33:00 and Alyssa Rodriguez made it two for the home team on a rebound off Lukas at 37:57.

HSU will complete its road matches next Friday starting at 7 p.m. against Cal State Stanislaus.
