Jacks seek scoring touch

Madi Payne
ARCATA - After averaging two goals in the first three matches of the season, Humboldt State has hit a women's soccer scoring drought it will look to correct this weekend.

The Lumberjacks will be able to enjoy their second weekend in a row and first College Creek Field starting Friday afternoon.

HSU will have its last successful winning match opponent, San Francisco State, come to campus on Friday, before trying for a better result against Cal State Monterey Bay.

     Tough weekend in the books

Following an encouraging long road trip the previous weekend, HSU was unable to carry over the momentum on to the home pitch in the last two matches.

Opening last week's CCAA set of matches, HSU's hopes of notching its first home win of the year—to no avail.

Cal State Dominguez Hills netted its first goal 13 minutes into the match and added six more unanswered scores en route to a 7-0 victory.

The visiting Toros stymied the Lumberjacks' attack, while having their way offensively—outshooting the Lumberjacks 33-6. Freshman Ariel Diehl pelted the Cal State Dominguez Hills' goal with four of the six HSU shots.

HSU was able to pick themselves up with a much better Sunday performance for all but the final minute.

HSU kept the Cal State Los Angeles' attack out of the net for 89 minutes—only to fall victim to a last-minute header.

With extra time looming—and 89:05 coming off the clock—Golden Eagles' forward Amalia Arvidsson took the long left-side pass from defender Janelle Hanna and headed it in the right side of the net to close out the Lumberjacks for the women's soccer match's lone score of the day, 1-0.

     HSU looking for scoring gold

Despite scoring three goals in the season opening victory, the Jacks' offensive output has been "Missing in Action" in the last three weeks of play.

HSU has totaled only a single Colette Behen tally at Cal Poly Pomona three matches ago over the last 400 minutes of action.

The Jacks' nine goals over 10 matches puts them in ninth in the 12 team league.

Lukas sits at league's save leader

The HSU defense has done some heavy lifting during the team's first 10 matches.  Goalie Kelly Lukas has provided her own share of this lifting in the Jacks net.

Lukas heads into the next set of CCAA matches as the saves leader with 63.  The sophomore registered 12 saves against CSU Dominguez Hills and followed it by turning away eight attempts by Cal State Los Angeles.
