#6 Cal State Stanislaus shows might over HSU

Savannah Havranek
Box Score TURLOCK – A team ascends to a lofty national ranking for a reason and Humboldt State had the task of playing one of these women's soccer teams on Friday night.

The sixth-ranked Cal State Stanislaus Warriors found the net one time in each half and held HSU without a shot for all but the last seven seconds of a 2-0 shutout.

In the final seconds of the match, the Lumberjacks' Colette Behen forced the Warriors to scramble to preserve the shutout with a save at 89:53.

"Tonight was another opportunity to grow against not only the best team in the conference, but also one of the best teams in the country," explained HSU head coach Paul Karver.  ""We were better tonight than the first meeting, we had moments in the attack that were better and defensively we made things very difficult for them.  The large bulk of their chances came from 30 yards away and with goalkeepers like ours we can handle that."

For the night, the Warriors (15-0-2/13-0-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association North) outshot the Jacks (3-11-3/1-11-3 CCAA North) 16-1, including 9-0 in the first half.

"We had chances, the stat sheet doesn't give us enough credit but we had a number of chances on goal and just didn't finish, we were more dangerous tonight than the first meeting," added Karver.

HSU goalie Kelly Lukas recorded four saves in net.

Cal State Stanislaus received its first score only 8:05 into the match when Emily Relles found the goal off a free kick.

"The first goal was a gift that we hand wrapped for them, we were lost in the moment but then we responded for the rest of the half.  The second goal might be the best I've seen all year, it was special," said the HSU coach.

The HSU defense kept the game close and trailed by the lone score at intermission, but 7:09 into the latter stanza the home club struck again.  Katelyn Nebesnick took a pass and converted it into the second and final tally of the match at 52:09.

HSU will travel back home to host #18 Sonoma State on Sunday morning starting at 11:30 a.m. for 'Senior Day' at College Creek Field.
