#18 Seawolves clip Jacks in season finale

Samantha Morris goes up for the header
Box Score ARCATA — Humboldt State capped off a transitional season with another strong defensive effort against a nationally-ranked opponent, while bidding adeu to a pair of seniors Sunday afternoon.

As has been the case all fall season, HSU women's soccer had opportunities, but had a hard time converting with a good defensive effort, yet fall 2-0 to 18th-rated Sonoma State.

"Today, the girls showed a great deal of maturity in both the defending and attacking unfortunately we were unable to find the back of the net," said Lumberjacks' head coach Paul Karver.  "We gifted them goals early in both halves but continued to fight."

Sonoma State (12-3-3/10-3-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association North) didn't take long to get in the scoring column when Lauren Curtain scored at the 7:45 mark for a 1-0 lead.

HSU could not convert on any of its five first half shots over the final 37:15 of the opening half.

The Seawolves struck again early in the second half.  Taylor Enzler collected a loose ball and deposited it in the net at the 51:31 mark to make the score 2-0.

In the final 10 minutes, a Savannah Havranek header (80:54) and a Colette Behen boot with nine seconds left were both saved by the visiting goalkeeper to keep HSU off the board.

Despite the loss, the Jacks (3-12-3/1-12-3 CCAA North) tripled their victories from a year ago on the day when defender Sydney Nicholas and defensive midfielder Chelsea LaRue took part in their final matches.

"The last game of the season is always emotional but when you say goodbye to special people like Chelsea and Sydney it is extra emotional.  Words cannot begin to express what they have both meantto this program.  The both give everything they have and never ask for anything in return, they are very special people," explained Karver.

The Jacks' defense saw 17 Seawolves' shots taken along with 10 corner kicks.

Another solid effort was turned in by HSU goalie Kelly Lukas, who saved 10 shots in the match.

"It will be nice for the girls to have some time off but they have already starting talking about the spring. This is a motivated group right now and we will be looking to carry that motivation through the spring and into next fall," concluded the HSU coach on the future of the squad.
