CSU Monterey Bay works ahead to take HSU women’s soccer

Box Score SEASIDE – After keeping its opponents to one score in the two opening matches, Humboldt State women's soccer could not continue the feat in the first league battle.

Cal State Monterey Bay put the first goal on the board seven minutes in and four unanswered overall on its way to a 5-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Friday afternoon.

The Otters, in fact, held the Lumberjacks (2-1/0-1 CCAA) without a single shot attempt in the first half of action, while booting 11 of their own. The home club finished with a 17-6 advantage.

"For every few steps forward in a journey you must be able to take one step back and reevaluate. We have taken a small step back, but we have not fallen," explained Jacks coach Paul Karver.  "Cal State Monterey Bay was a very organized and hard working team.  They deserve all of the credit for being better than us today."

Maddi Null and Colette Behen produced the two HSU scores with Sydney Nicholas assisting on the first. Keeper Kelly Lukas saved five shots in net.

Hannah Cobb took a cross and went one-on-one with HSU's Lukas for the opening score at 7:21. Jami Murray made it 2-0 for the host when she put a loose ball in front of the net in for a goal with 31:05 into action.

The Otters added two more goals eight minutes apart in the first 20 minutes of the latter stanza.

Nicholas passed to Null, who booted the ball 15 yards from the left side to put the Jacks on the board to make it 4-1 with 22:19 left in the affair.

Following the fifth Otters score, Behen added one more to the Jacks' total on a free kick at 81:26.

"We responded in the second half and created a number of chances.  We continue to define who we are and the second half allowed us to do that in a positive way," said Karver.

The Jacks will look to rebound on Sunday in a 2 p.m. bout at San Francisco State.
