Box Score CARSON, Calif. — Despite five late opportunities, the Humboldt State women's soccer team fell, 1-0, at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon.
The Toros posted the match's lone score when Gabrielle Pena drove a ball 25 yards to the far post at 53:53. HSU saw its five shots in the final 20 minutes end come up short.
Taylor McMillin drove the best attempt with 4:09 left only to have it saved.
The Jacks (6-7/1-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association) dropped their sixth-straight and fifth match in a row without a score. The Toros (2-11-1) claimed their second league win to go to 2-5.
"A great deal of credit goes to Cal State Dominguez Hills. They outworked, outplayed and outdesired us this afternoon," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "You can blame it on a million things and make a million excuses, but the reality is that our minds are not in the right place right now. It is always going to be a growing process. Last year, we competed through the first two weekends, and this year, we competed through the first five, so there is a great deal of improvement."
HSU's Sammie Morris (17:45) and
Lizzie Mitchell (19:48) had lone first half team shots. The Jacks attempted two more shots in the second half's opening three minutes.
Maddi Null had the second of the two shots, which was saved by the Toros' keeper.
Amber Woolcock recorded three saves in net for HSU. Cal State Dominguez Hills finished with a 12-9 shot advantage for the match.
HSU will complete its weekend trip at No. 16 Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
