Box Score ARCATA, Calif. — On a hot Thursday afternoon,
Lizzie Mitchell and the Humboldt State women's soccer defense blanked Holy Names, 3-0, to continue its winning ways in the home opener.
Mitchell connected on one goal 12 minutes into the match and added a second just over a minute into the second half to lead the Lumberjacks offense.
Taylor McMillin added a late third goal to seal the victory.
The HSU defense held Holy Names to only a single shot in each half as the North Coast team controlled the possession throughout the match.
The Jacks victory take them to 4-1 on the year and runs their win streak to four wins in a row, the longest such streak since winning the four-straight in the 2008 season. The HSU win is also the team's first in almost exactly two years, a 2-1 victory over Chico State on Sept. 23, 2012, and covering 10 matches.
"Winning in front of our home crowd felt great today, they have traveled well for us in the first two weekends and it was important for us to return the favor," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Today was about getting the monkey off our back, not getting a win at home last year was a cloud over us and today we took care of that."
HSU pelted the Holy Names' goalie with 22 shots with 11 making the way on goal. For the second time in three matches, goalie
Amber Woolcock recorded a shutout.
"Holy names was organized and caused a number of problems for us in the attacking one-third of the field," said Karver.
Coming from the right wing,
Maddi Null found Mitchell on the left side of the box. The co-captain Mitchell put the ball away from eight yards for the first score.
At the beginning of the second half,
Marquel Love tapped the ball to Mitchell, who lofted a ball 25 yards to the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0 HSU.
McMillin deflected an
Angel Gosse pass in the 82
nd minute to complete the home scoring.
"Now we have to focus on what will be a very good BYU-Hawaii team, we expect them to be a significant test for us," said Karver.
HSU will entertain BYU-Hawaii in an 11 a.m. Saturday morning match.
