Men’s Soccer Looks To Send Seniors Out On High Note

ARCATA, Calif. – For the final time as collegiate athletes, eight Humboldt State men's soccer players will have the opportunity to put on the Green and Gold at College Creek Field. The Lumberjacks (1-9-2, 0-6-2) host Cal State East Bay on Friday at 3 p.m. and Stanislaus State on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Last weekend, the Jacks scored four goals over two games, ending a three-match scoreless drought. However, HSU was only able to collect one point on the weekend.

"We found a way to score some goals this last weekend," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We improved in one area, but then we moved backwards in another area. We just need to find a way to put it all together. We have to have a positive attacking weekend and positive defending weekend, and that is what we are trying to put together for the rest of the season."

Cal State East Bay (4-9-0, 2-6-0) comes to Arcata with similar disappointments this year. The Pioneers are the lone CCAA team to allow more goals than Humboldt in conference play this season. If last weekend's offense shows up again for the Jacks, there could be plenty of scoring on Friday, despite the fact that East Bay has won back-to-back matches.

Sunday's match will not only feature fourth-place Stanislaus State (11-2-1, 5-2-1), but will kick off with a pregame ceremony to recognize the Lumberjack seniors. Stanislaus enters the week as one of only two CCAA teams, along with conference leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-1-2, 7-0-2) with double-digit wins on the season.

"We're just fighting now for something for us to grab hold of going forward," said Jungemann. "Hopefully we have a reason to come out and fight for our seniors and send them out in a positive way."

The Jacks will then travel south to wrap up the season. Humboldt has games scheduled at Cal Poly Pomona and then at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 29 and 31, respectively.
