ARCATA, Calif. – The playoff race is alive in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Any number of teams can not only make the CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, but also have a chance to finish at the top of the table.
Humboldt State women's soccer (7-5-2, 3-3-2) currently sits eighth in the conference with 11 points. With two favorable results over Cal State East Bay (5-9-0, 3-5-0) on Friday, then Stanislaus State (9-3-2, 4-2-2) on Sunday, the Jacks have the potential to jump all the way up to second in the CCAA.
"It's one game at a time for us," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "If we can open up the game and start to move the ball the way we did over the weekend, and then add to that some good finishing which we have, we can come away with points this weekend."
The Green and Gold are in position to determine their own destiny for a playoff berth. Both the Pioneers, below the Jacks in the standings, and the Warriors, currently sitting in fifth in the CCAA, also have that same potential and will be fighting for their playoff lives this weekend as well.
Friday's match will begin at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday's match will kick off at 11:30 a.m. at College Creek Field. Prior to Sunday's match, there will be a pregame ceremony recognizing the members of the senior class who will be playing their final regular season match on campus.
"What's really important is the leadership of the older players," said Karver. "Senior day is always an emotional day. It's emotional for us as a staff, it's emotional for the players graduating, and it's emotional for the players returning. It's going to be a day of celebration for them, as it should be."
The seniors are guaranteed two final games after this week, with a trip down south to play San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona still on the schedule. This will be the final week of the CCAA regular season, with playoffs starting immediately after.
