Box Score ARCATA, Calif. – The HSU women's soccer team showed no shortage of fight in its battle with the visiting Tritons of UC San Diego Friday afternoon at College Creek Field, but ultimately was done in by a header off a corner kick from the visitors in double overtime in the 2-1 final.
The result improves UC San Diego, ranked No. 8 in the country, to 12-1 overall and 9-0 in CCAA play, and the Jacks moved to 6-6-1, 2-5-1 conference.
"Today was a bit of a heartbreaker for us," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "It was a fantastic team effort again from the girls who were completely dedicated to the game plan. As frustrating as this is, it's hard to be anything but proud of the girls."
It was
Alex Jenkins with her seventh tally of the year assisted by
Lindsay Stoner that got the Jacks on the board first at 15:11, followed shortly by San Diego's counter as Natalie Saddic found the back of the net on a penalty kick at 22:09. The teams then fought long and hard through the rest of the first and second halves and one scoreless overtime session.
In the end, though, at the 106:20 mark, it was Mary Reilly taking Elisa Martinez' corner kick and heading it into the net to give San Diego its winning margin.
HSU goalie
Katelin Talbert registered a total of 12 saves in the match.
The Jacks were led by Stoner's four shots, with one on goal.
Jacquelyn Dompier had two shots with one on goal, and
Sabine Postma had two shots.
"Huge credit to UCSD and their staff," said Karver. "They are very talented and there is no mystery why they are ranked No. 8 in the country."
HSU returns to action Sunday against Cal State San Marcos at home with an 11:30 a.m. start.
