Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. - Humboldt State women's soccer took advantage of a couple early scoring opportunities and punctuated Sunday's 4-0 win over Benedictine at Mesa with two late goals.
The result improved HSU's record to 4-3-1.
"I think that Benedictine was well-organized and came out high energy, and our girls did a really good job of absorbing that energy by possessing the ball," said Head Coach
Paul Karver.
Erin Siegal got her first goal of the year with what Karver called "a really nice finish" near the 10-minute mark, receiving the ball at the top of the box, turning, and chipping it past the goalkeeper from about 25 yards out. Moments later, HSU had an opportunity as the ball went wide.
Madison Barnett whipped the ball into the near post to
Jacquelyn Dompier, who headed one near-post, upper-90 at the 15-minute mark to make it 2-0.
In the second half, at 52 minutes,
Rose Harman bent the ball on a corner-kick into the far post with her right foot to start up the scoring again. Finally, it was
Lindsay Stoner stepping up on a penalty kick to get it done for the Jacks at 70 minutes, accounting for the 4-0 final.
"There were four good, really classy goals from the girls," said Karver, "And overall just better attacking play. I thought that where we did have a lot of momentum and a lot of opportunities on Friday,"--a 1-0 loss to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.)--"we took a lot of it for granted. Today we didn't do that. Today we made every opportunity we had really count. The goals that we scored were fantastic, the possession that we played with was very good, and we hope that this now gets us a little momentum preparing for Chico on Friday."
Karver thought there was some truth to the idea that the disappointment of not attaining two victories on the weekend would fuel his girls' hunger for wins as conference play starts again this coming week.
The Jacks will return to CCAA action against Chico State at home on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and follow that with a Sunday, 11:30 a.m. contest versus Stanislaus State also at College Creek Field.
