ARCATA, Calif. – After getting back on the right foot with a strong 4-0 showing on Sunday against Benedictine at Mesa (Ariz.) in a game played in Vallejo, the Humboldt State women's soccer team will play host to two CCAA opponents this weekend. Chico State comes to town for a Friday, 12:30 p.m. match, and Stanislaus State will visit the Jacks on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
After a season-opening, three-game winning streak, the Jacks had difficulty with an especially challenging part of their schedule, going 0-2-1 against CCAA competition and dropping one to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 1-0 last Friday before finding their goal-scoring capacity once again versus Benedictine. Erin Siegal,
Jacquelyn Dompier,
Rose Harman, and
Lindsay Stoner all scored for HSU.
"We went into Sunday knowing that we're playing better futbol, but the question was what we were going to do to make sure we capitalize," said Head Coach
Paul Karver, in acknowledging that his team simply had to be better at finding the back of the net. "We had some very serious conversations with our front line and they responded."
Karver praised Chico State's program as one with girls that really compete and know how to win, but says that "our girls are hungry, and that really showed in our last game on Sunday, winning 4-nil, and now they want more. I think they're really starting to sense it. The girls are out there looking for more work, trying to train really hard, and we're looking forward to it."
The Wildcats captured wins over Stanislaus State and San Francisco State last week. Chico State has a 5-3 record and a 2-2 mark in conference action. Erin Woods leads the Wildcats with five goals. Chico State defeated HSU 5-1 last season.
Stanislaus State hopes to find success on the road despite its 1-3 mark away from Turlock. The Warriors have lost three of their last four matches but recorded a draw last week against San Francisco State. Stanislaus has been limited to one goal in its last four matches. HSU lost to Stanislaus, 2-0, in 2016.
