ARCATA, Calif. – After a pair of impressive home victories this past weekend at their own Lumberjack Classic, the Humboldt State women's soccer team hits the road this Friday to take on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Ore.
The Lumberjacks are led by the attacking force that is junior midfielder Alex Jenkins, who has nine shots, two goals, and an assist in this young season.
"I think that a lot of it [our success] has really been to do with the work rate we've been putting in lately," said Jenkins, who said that due to the squad's relative inexperience it would be important that they continue to exhibit a lot of "scrappiness, fighting for every win."
Jenkins was optimistic when reflecting on the opportunity that travel presents.
"I think it's definitely difficult being in the vans for long periods of time, since we don't really have any close opponents" she said, "but since we had to do a bit of traveling last spring, a lot of us are used to it at this point."
Jenkins thought it was good for the incoming freshmen and transfers that the Jacks got to taste road battle in an exhibition versus Corban two weekends ago, a 2-1 victory.
There was some doubt cast by HSU Head Coach Paul Karver as to whether the contest would take place considering the wildfires currently burning in Oregon, but he said he had been in constant contact with the Oregon Tech coach and, that while player safety is a priority, he is hopeful that they will be able to compete.
"Friday's another great opportunity to take more steps forward; it's a really fun group and they love learning, and they're working their tails off right now, so we're having a lot of fun," said Karver, who noted both Jenkins' emergence as a fast, technical presence and the adept playing of balls into space by those feeding her.
Friday's game is a scheduled noon start.
