Humboldt State Women’s Soccer To Start Off 2021 At College Creek Field

ARCATA, Calif---  The Humboldt State wome'ns soccer team will begin its 2021 regular season this Labor Day Weekend with a pair of NCAA Division II West Region matches at College Creek Field.  The Lumberjacks will host Dominican this Friday, September 3 at 2pm and Hawai'I Hilo this Sunday, September 5 at 1pm. 
 
COACHING STAFF:  Coach Grant Landy will begin his second season at the helm of the Lumberjack women's soccer program after coaching for 23 years at Concordia University-Portland.  He will be assisted by Lumberjack Alum Taylor McMillin, who is in her fourth season as the top assistant for the women's soccer team.
 
2020-21:  The Lumberjacks went 2-1-1 in their five matches during the pandemic year.  Humboldt State went 1-0-1 against NCAA Division I foe, Portland State with a 0-0 tie and a 1-0 victory against the Vikings.  Alexis Aguilar posted three shutouts including back to back shutouts against Portland State.  Brooke Weese paced HSU with her three goals while Baylee Groom had a goal and an assist.  Also scoring a goal for the 'Jacks was Kendal Sencer while Mia Castaneda, Erin Mohr and Groom each had an assist. 
 
BACK IN 2019:  Humboldt State went 4-11-2 and 3-8 in the GNAC back in 2019.  Returning letter-winners from that team are Kelsey Bess, Kendal Spencer, Maddie Johnson, Claire Bareilles, Poppy Cartledge, Tana Eri and Mia Castaneda.  Bess had two goals and assisted on two goals while Spencer scored a goal. 
 
IN GOAL:  Alexis Aguilar has seen most of the time in the preseason in goal for the 'Jacks.  During the pandemic year, Aguilar posted three shutouts and gave up six goals in HSU's five matches.  She transferred in 2020 from Notre Dame de Namur University.
 
NEWCOMERS:  Ryley Burton-Tauzer, Niki Clark, Sarah Hines, Annie Hoffman, Emma McChristie, Josie Wolitzky and Carson Thomson-Terrel are this year's newcomers to the Lumberjacks.
 
SCHOLARS OFF THE PITCH:  As a team, the Lumberjacks posted a 3.64 term grade point average during the spring semester.  This was their highest grade point average in ten years.  Nine players were named to the school's Presidential Scholar List while four were named to the Dean's List.  11 Lumberjacks were named to the CCAA All-Academic Team and CCAA Fall All-Academic Team plus five were named to the D2ADA Academic Achievement Team.

REGULAR SEASON HOME OPENER:  The Lumberjacks will host Dominican University this Friday, September 3 at 3pm.  The Penguins went 5-1 during the 2020-21 season with their only loss a 1-0 loss to the 'Jacks.  Danielle Gonzalez paced Dominican with her two goals and two assists while Jaqueline Catano posted a 0.41 goals against average with a .800 saves percentage.  In 2019, the Penguins went 5-7-6 including 2-6-3 in the PacWest.  Tanya Bills and Victoria Avina each had four goals to lead the way for the Penguins.  Humboldt State leads the all-time series with the Penguins 4-0 with all four wins being by a 1-0 score. 
 
HAWAI'I HILO:  Hawaii Hilo went 0-0-4 last year and 6-7-4 in 2019.  Jodi Lillie led the Vulcans with her two goals in 2020-21.  Viviana Poli posted a 0.86 goals against average with a .750 saves percentage.  In 2019, Nanei Wall paced Hilo with her five goals.  This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Vulcans will host Westminster on Thursday prior to facing the 'Jacks.
 
UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will return to the pitch next weekend in Monmouth, Oregon, for a pair of non-conference matches against Central Washington and Western Oregon.  The 'Jacks will face Central Washington on September 10 at noon and Western Oregon on September 12 at noon.
