Lumberjack Notes
Humboldt State enters the season full of youth with just seven upperclassmen on a roster of 27 players. While other teams have been able to play multiple games to get any nerves out of their systems, the Jacks have only gotten to practice, something slightly concerning to head coach CJ Johnson.
"We have to be realistic," said Johnson. "We're nearly a month into the season and we haven't had the opportunity to have any scrimmages or pre-season matches. Once the whistle blows, there will be a lot of nerves. It's our job as a staff to calm those nerves and get the team prepared."
After redshirting a lot of players last year, along with the combination of this year's freshmen class, Johnson and his staff are excited about the direction the program is heading. Helping lead the way are captains
Carly Kolpin and
Bre Taylor, who Johnson says have both been "very consistent through camp."
Senior
Tamra James is also adjusting well in the back line for the Jacks after playing more of an attack role last year.
Chelsea LaRue also made the switch to a defensive state of mind and will look to help anchor the defense with sophomore
Allie Swanson. Newcomers
Carissa Chase and
Erica McMullen are both challenging for playing time, as well as starting nods, in the defense for HSU.
Johnson is very happy with the progress his attacking players have been making, especially in regards to making runs and combining with the midfield. Sophomore Colete Behen has become more confident in front of the net and will provide a threat on offense for the Jacks, along with redshirt freshman
Elle Reid.
Savannah Havranek, who also sat last season out, is a good addition to the midfield and will look to make dangerous combinations with the forwards.
Injury Report
The Jacks are a little banged up, but nothing too serious.
Johnson says
"We don't start with easy match-ups. Both teams have very different styles. Cal Poly Pomona is very athletic and San Francisco State typically is very physical and plays direct." ... "They both will have three to four games under their belts so that's concerning, but at least we'll be on our own turf. A lot of support will be there so that'll be good for the girls." ... "We still have three more games to figure out the starting lineup. We don't know what adjustments we have or what our weaknesses are since we haven't seen the girls in game action. This weekend is a very important to prepare for the rest of conference play."
