Humboldt State finished second in the nation 2004 and built on the success of the first boat that ever went to the NCAA Championships in 2003.  They were one of two teams to represent the West Region at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Lumberjacks' Varsity Four won the national championship--- the first boat in HSU history to advance to a NCAA national championship race.  On the final day of racing the Varsity Four+ led wire to wire posting their fastest time of the season to finish as National Champions.  The Lumberjack's Varsity Eight finished second in the nation.  The varsity eight+ in the championship race went from lane 5 out to lane 7 and had to make serious course correction to get back on the course.  The ladies continued to hammer and at the 1000-meter mark, the coxswain made an unplanned move that moved the 'Jacks through the pack.  The call is very common in today's standard of racing, but not back then.  In total points, HSU placed second overall.
