Humboldt Athletics Hall of Fame
It is fitting that Earl Meneweather was selected as the initial inductee into the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame as he epitomized the first resounding success in men’s athletics at Humboldt State. Meneweather arrived on campus with a group of athletes attracted by the newly appointed football coach Charley Erb in 1935. He proved to be the key to the astounding success enjoyed by the small college at the expense of many of its larger sister institutions.
Meneweather proved to be an exciting breakaway runner who broke ballgames wide open with his elusive drives and immediately caught the attention and respect of fans and opponents alike. His feats became so firmly entrenched in the memory of local fans that 30 years later many stoutly declare him to be the greatest football player in the history of the college which has had a succession of exceptional athletic talent. His exploits have become tradition.
