He captured All-Americans honors in the 1500-meters as he finished fourth in 1968 and fifth in 1969.
After Humboldt State, Engel continued running as he was a member of the 1977 US World Cross Country Team that competed in Dusseldorf, Germany, and ran in the famous Cinque Mulini race outside Milan, Italy. He ran a 2:22 marathon to qualify for the 1980 Olympic Trials and was a member of the Croydon AC that set Australian National record for 10-man 24-relay in 1974.
Engel was a creative director at Wieden & Kennedy, Portland on the Nike and ESPN accounts. He later wrote and directed several short films including one for HSU.
He states he owes so much to Gary Tuttle and Coach Hunt for convincing him to go to HSU.
