Humboldt Athletics Hall of Fame
Engel graduated from Humboldt State in 1971 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art with a double minor in History and Physical Education. He set the school records in the 880, mile and 1500 meters. The two-time All-American lead the nation in College Division with his mile time for several months. He captured All-Americans honors in the 1500-meters as he finished fourth in 1968 and fifth in 1969.Â

After Humboldt State, Engel continued running as he was a member of the 1977 US World Cross Country Team that competed in Dusseldorf, Germany, and ran in the famous Cinque Mulini race outside Milan, Italy. He ran a 2:22 marathon to qualify for the 1980 Olympic Trials and was a member of the Croydon AC that set Australian National record for 10-man 24-relay in 1974.Â

Engel was a creative director at Wieden & Kennedy, Portland on the Nike and ESPN accounts. He later wrote and directed several short films including one for HSU.Â
