Dobe Harrison played football and baseball for Fortuna High School and was a member of the County championship baseball teams of that institution which had the distinction of winning the crown for four straight years. His fame was such that when President Van Metre personally recruited several players to strengthen the college team in 1925, Harrison was among the first to be contacted.

In addition to an outstanding baseball career, Dobe was a member of the football team at fullback and played on the first team to win an all-college contest in the history of the institution.
