Claude Eshleman was one of the troop who followed Joseph Forbes to Humboldt State in 1946, after having been a member of his teams in Southern California. At Compton Junior College, Eshelman was a leading scorer on a nationally ranked basketball team which won 22 of 25 games in the Metropolitan League. He was a champion hurdler with a time of 14.9 seconds in the 120 highs.

He was a member of the Lumberjack team of 1947 which also won 22 games. Eshelman was selected for all-conference as a forward with Darrell Brown. He held the college hurdle record for a number of years and his long jump record stood for almost twenty season. While he was a fine football player, a little on the slight side, his coach would not permit varsity competition for fear of injury. He did play junior varsity ball under Dummy Wells and was instrumental in the winning of several games with his long runs.
