Leonard Longholm entered HSC in the fall of 1983 from Eureka High where he had been the outstanding athlete. During his years at college, he earned four letters in football, four in basketball, and four in track. After playing in the shadow of Earl Meneweather during his freshman year in football, Longholm had a brilliant year as a sophomore. In the final game of the season he scored two TDs in runs of 35 and 60 yards and later set up another with a 62-yard dash. In basketball he alternated with Billy Lee as high point man on Humboldt’s first Far Western championship team.

HSC had a small track team in the spring of 1940 so Longholm competed in the pole vault and the mile. In 1942 he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles professional football team but chose to enter the service.
