When the early football teams are discussed, the name Meneweather always epitomizes the era. But mention basketball and it’s Billy Lee that stands out for the pre-World War II teams. He came to Humboldt State College with Coach Herb Hart from Illinois in 1983, and during his four years at HSC received three letters in football, four in basketball, and three in tennis.

Lee was an all-conference basketball forward and a quotation from a Chico paper indicates the recognition afforded by opposing coaches: “Coach Eberhart of Southern Oregon is very high on Bill Lee, Humboldt State Flash, who played here last month. Given the choice of All-American Bobby Arnett, All-County Wally Johansen, or just plain Bill Lee from Humboldt, Coach Eberhart voiced his preference for the much-publicized Lee.” Billy played quarterback on the football team and was the number two man in the conference in tennis.
