Lee Seidell was an outstanding combination of scholar and athlete. He was active in student government and was president of the junior class. In 1938 he was captain of the “Humboldt Thunderbolts” under Fred Telonicher when that basketball team for the first time played more than eight intercollegiate games. While the team won only four of the eleven college contests, they won all of their Redwood League games to become undisputed champions of the North Coast. Two of Seidell's teammates were Hall of Fame members, Billy Lee and Franny Givins.

Seidell attended Bay Elementary School in the Arcata bottoms and was an honor roll student at Arcata High where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track.
