Barnum had an outstanding track and football record at HSU from 1955-59. In his sophomore year at HSU Barnum was named most valuable player in football and to the All-Conference long jump and second in the high jump. In his junior year he was voted most inspirational football player and was on the All-Conference second team. In his senior year he was co-captain of the football team, most inspirational player and named to the All-Conference first team
