Zeke Saunderson raced 80 yards for a touchdown in his first college football game. He played guard for the Lumberjacks in 1936-38 and returned to the campus in 1939 to complete his football career as a fullback under Coach Herb Hart. Zeke not only excelled at football, but he was a basketball and tennis standout. As guard on the basketball team, he helped the Lumberjacks defeat San Jose State on their home court. He was noted for his two-handed set shot.

Saunderson was a star in football, basketball, and tennis at Eureka High before matriculating to Humboldt. He retained his interest in sports after graduation and played several years with the Eureka Sportsman Club basketball team in the semi-pro ranks.
