Baker quarterbacked HSU’s 1956 Far Western Conference title team in football, was a member of the 1955-56 basketball team, pitched on the winning 1956 baseball and was a high jumper on the 1959 track team, the only year Humboldt won the conference title in track. In 1955 as a sophomore, baker led the nation in total yards gained passing. Although the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers contacted him about playing pro ball, Baker had a desire to coach. He has since been a successful high school coach.
