Elta “Cinder-Elta” Cartwright was accorded the distinction of election to the Men’s Hall of Fame, the first woman member of the Humboldt State group and probably one of the few so honored in any college in the United States. Recognition was based upon outstanding credentials which include: first woman qualifying for Women’s Olympic Team; a world record in the women’s long jump; national champion in three events in women’s track for two years; and a member of the seven-member women’s track team which won the national championship for Humboldt in 1926 at Newark, N.J. As a member of the Olympic team which included women’s track and field for the first time in 1928, miss Cartwright participated in the Games in Amsterdam. She was acclaimed by national sports writers as the “greatest woman athlete in America”.
